Madam Park Geun Hye Addresses U.S. - Korea Relations in a Changing World

Madam Park Geun Hye, former chairperson of South Korea's Grand National Party and the daughter of late President Park Jung Hee, came to FSI's Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center to offer an address on "Korea and the United States in a Rapidly Changing World." In introducing Madam Park, Shorenstein APARC Acting Director Michael H. Armacost observed that she was just 22 years old when her mother was brutally assassinated and ably served Korea as acting first lady during her father's term before rising in her own right to become a respected leader of her party. In her address, Madam Park noted that U.S. - Republic of Korea ties are longstanding and had been "forged in blood," emphasizing the two nations' common interests in maintaining a Korean peninsula free of nuclear weapons and a liberal, open, and expanding trading system for goods and services.
